What type of campus sustainability transformation is possible when students become fully integrated with facilities management? Using social media and interactive digital media that integrate benchmarking goals and real-time data with easily interpreted graphics and a user-friendly interface, the ACT! Earth™ pilot at Philadelphia University offers a success story for creating a platform for communicating university’s initiatives, developing educational events and student activities, and providing interactive technologies to promote improved practices in energy management.
Both user behavior and technology are integral to sustainability success, and an informed user is a sustainability program’s best advocate. Using a student from the Sustainable Design graduate program to work as the Act! Earth coordinator, the program is also undertaking the university’s first greenhouse gas inventory and developing the associated climate action plan to fulfill the commitments of the ACUPCC.
Campus pilot participants and Honeywell liaisons will discuss the ACT! Earth™ model, including the post-assessment evaluation of the effectiveness of the program, and recommendations for future partnerships. This session will describe the partnership and the program, and illustrate sample dashboards, review lessons learned, and recommendations for the third party campus sustainability coordinator role moving forward.
