Water and Your Campus: Protecting Our “Hidden” Resource

January 31, 2012 | 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM EST

Over the past several decades our demand for clean water has increased as the supply has dwindled. Much of the U.S. now faces crisis-level shortages for this most basic and irreplaceable resource. Not only are we facing shortages, but the cost of water is rising 9% annually nationwide, narrowing the disconnect between current water prices and the true cost of water. Municipalities now struggle to address their community’s needs with limited resources, aging infrastructure, and ever expanding consumption.

This webinar is designed to organize a diverse group of individuals with expertise in water and sustainability to expose campuses to water issues, programs, and solutions. The average campus currently uses over 80 million gallons of drinking water per year for HVAC, irrigation, and sanitary needs, 70% of which can be supplemented by non-potable water sources through water reclamation and reuse. Water reuse lowers costs, protects the surrounding environment, and maintains adequate resources for the surrounding community, while significantly reducing the energy associated with water distribution. The webinar panel will discuss how some universities have dealt with these challenges while creating student engagement and academic opportunities. Please join us for a thoughtful discussion with engineers, USGBC liaisons, academic and financial experts to help alleviate the problem and fulfill ACUPCC signatories’ commitment.

Panelists Include:
Jonathan Lanciani, President and CEO, Organica Sustainable Water
Tim Baldwin, PE, Senior Vice President, McKim and Creed
Neil Rosen, Vice-Chairman Water Efficiency Technical Advisory Group, USGBC National
William Hare, Director, DC Water Resources Research Institute, UDC
Dr. Ivy Short, Project Specialist, Chair, College of Agriculture, Urban Sustainability and Environmental Sciences , University of District of Columbia
